Mission

Sonoma County Tool Library has a simple mission: expanding free, equitable access to resources that strengthen our community. Tools empower residents to take action–repairing, creating, and building resilience.

History

The Tool Library was founded in 2008 by Dustin Zuckerman, when he began lending tools from a small one-bedroom carriage house in Santa Rosa. Starting with a printed list of roughly 15 personal tools shared between neighbors, the library grew quickly through trust, word of mouth, and generous community donations.

As more residents discovered the library, and the value of borrowing instead of buying, the collection expanded and volunteers stepped in to organize and manage the growing inventory. Volunteer-run from the beginning, the Tool Library evolved from a small neighbor-to-neighbor effort into a trusted nonprofit resource serving hundreds of borrowers each year and facilitating thousands of tool loans across the region.

What began as a simple act of sharing has become a community-powered resource that saves money, reduces waste, and strengthens neighborhoods throughout Sonoma County.

Leadership

In 2026, Martin Reed was appointed as the organization’s first Executive Director following the founder, marking a new chapter of growth and long-term stability. The organization was also renamed the Sonoma County Tool Library to better reflect the broader community it serves.
